Rocks protrude from the sand in the west of Egypt in the forms of camels, tents and mushrooms. Therein lies the mysteries of the White Desert with a landscape as if from another planet.

Sandstorms and wind shaped the limestone over millions of years – so that the “White Desert” looks like a sculpture park today. Here, the pharaohs sent exiles to the inhospitable areas and posted guards against hostile nomadic tribes.

More recently, more and more people have voluntarily traveled to the “White Desert” – to marvel at nature. The landscape has been protected as a national park since 2002.

A visit here will always be one of the highlights of a trip to Egypt.

Day 1: Cairo - Bahareya - Black Desert - White Desert National Park

We will pick you up from your hotel or private address. After tha we drive for around 3 hours to the Bahareya Oasis and after arrival there, we first strengthen ourselves with lunch.

The oasis is situated in a 100km by 40km (62 by 25 miles) depression and is completely surrounded by high black escarpments, Bahareya is a natural treasure of Egypt and well worth visiting. The valley floor is covered with lush groves of date palms, olives, ancient springs, and wells. We might have time on the third day to explore the oasis.

Now we are heading further south and making a stop in the Black Desert before we reach the White Desert. Millions of years ago the desert was a seabed. Layers of sedimentary rock were exposed when the ocean retreated and a plateau broke down. Some stones formations resisted time's changes, giving the White Desert its distinct features and charm.

Beyond all geological explanations, it is always exciting to let your imagination run wild and discover rabbits, ducks and human heads in the limestone formations. We will look for a nice and quiet camping place in the National Park.

Day 2: White Desert National Park

There is so much to see here – let yourself be shown and driven around and capture memories with the camera and the eye.

Along with protecting the unique white sands and rock formations of the Sahara Desert, the park also protects an array of wildlife. Some of the more popular species include barbary sheep, fennek fox, Dorcas gazelle, jackal, red fox, Rhmim gazelle, Ruppell’s fox, and Sand cats.

See above with an overnight under the stars at a campsite in the White desert. Maybe you will meet a fennek close to your campfire looking for some leftovers.

The routine of the day can varry a little depending on the season, the weather and also on the interest of the traveller’s. If they have any special wishes or they just want to enjoy and be surprised what our guide will present next. Already in the late afternoon we will built up our second camp again at a chosen spot, a little away from must other groups.

We will enjoy our privacy.

Day 3: White Desert National Park - Crystal Mountain - Bahareya - Cairo

After breakfast we cross again different areas of this spectacular place before heading onto the asphalt road that will lead us back to the Oasis Bahareya.

Before we reach the oasis we will have a further stop at Crystal Mountain.

We will have a quick cold lunch in the oasis and we could still decide if we would want to enjoy the special experience of taking a bath in a hot spring.

Then we will start our way back to Cairo.

It was magic – and even though I am an experienced desert traveler – it is always new to immerge in that beautiful landscape. Thanks to the Dabuka Team that made it happen!
