The name "Islamic" Cairo refers not to a greater prominence of Muslims in the area but rather to the city's rich history and heritage since its foundation in the early period of Islam, while distinguishing it from with the nearby Ancient Egyptian sites of Giza and Memphis.This area holds one of the largest and densest concentrations of historic architecture in the Islamic world. It is characterized by hundreds of mosques, tombs, madrasas, mansions, caravanserais, and fortifications dating from throughout the Islamic era of Egypt.

We will show you some especially interesting mosques - Al Azhar - Al Hussein - El Sayeda Zeinab .

El Sayeda Zeinab for example,  was the grand daughter of prophet Mohammed.

However, you will also find many interesting shops in this very unspoilt area. Especially fabrics and towels can be found here in good quality.

 

Al-Azhar Mosque

Transfer to the most famous mosque in Egypt , the Al Azhar Mosque.It was established for the purpose of spreading the Shiite Doctrine when Egypt was conquered by Jawhar Aṣ-Ṣiqilli, the army leader of Al-Mu‛izzulidīn Allah, the first Fatimid Caliph in Egypt. Currently, Al-Azhar teaches Islam according to the Sunni Doctrine.

Al-Hussein Mosque

Followed by another famous mosque, called Al Hussien Mosque.The Al-Hussein Mosque is thought by some to be the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein ibn Ali's head. Hussein was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His head was believed to have been brought to Cairo and buried somewhere in the grounds of the mosque.

Al Sayeda Zainab Mosque

Visit of that mosque. The Sayeda Zainab Mosque and Mausoleum is located in the Sayeda Zainab neighborhood in Cairo, where the neighborhood took its name from the owner of the shrine located inside the mosque, and it is in the middle of the neighborhood and the square opposite the mosque is also known as Sayeda Zainab Square. The neighborhood in which the mosque is located is one of the most famous popular neighborhoods in Cairo, where it is crowded with cafes and restaurants for popular foods.
